This song is about making a difference in the world and the pressure this standard can have on an individual. This standard demands productivity but as this song demonstrates, we can make a difference through our vulnerability.

Every day I reach the same place in me

I must say something to make a difference

Being a five in the enneagram typology, my need is to feel competent. Underneath I don’t feel worthy for just being me so I add value to myself with things I can do. All the while I can sense the futility of this.

I muster all my best breathing techniques

Treat each sense like it was God in relief

It doesn’t matter

Vulnerability is not common fare in our culture. People often don’t know how to respond to it. However, it’s power is undeniable and it cuts right through, creating a sympathetic resonance that invokes the vulnerability of those exposed.

Who I really am shrinks into a ball

You’re astonished with me curled on the ground

Wondering how I could be

Someone weak in the knees

You feel your heart in your throat

And you realize

I made a difference

We’re all hiding. We’re hiding from our own vulnerability and hiding this hiding of our vulnerability from the world. But the power of vulnerability brings people to their knees because it is a truth that speaks softly but deeply. It feels like dying but we’re actually being reborn into the wholeness of our being.

And you go back to your cave underground

You found some hope one day but now it is gone

You wonder how you can be

Someone weak in the knees

When all the rest of you is screaming for an ego reprieve

And you think you are dying

And you realize

You make a difference

The ability to find strength in our vulnerability is something that can be learned and practiced. We were born with this ability but it’s been trained out of us. We can recover it. It is the essence of our being. The kernel is just inside our worthiness or unworthiness as the case may be.
